David asked the question.We have version 3.05.1107 installed on Windows XP system. All Win updates have been installed. Bluehill will not open. There are no events in the application event viewer or system event viewer. We thought this was a.NET 3.5 issue, but after updating.NET it still will not launch.

We have sent the computer back to the Instron under RMA cs, it came back and will still not work. What is our next step to get this resolved? Our first series of user groups were held in NJ, CT and MA last week - and I think they were great! Those who attended liked the fact that we weren't too 'sales-pitchy' (if that is a word) and spent the most time on educating them on tips and tricks through small group stations. For this particular question - I have two tips for you.1.

The calculation you are trying to do is what we call in Bluehill a 'Preset Point'. So if you go to 'Calculations' in the method, you should be able to create a variety of different Preset Points for each of the strain values described above. I actually created a quick video for how to do this in a previous post - check it out under the 'Training/How To' section. Post is called 'Modulus at 300% Strain - How do I do that?' We have much of the test method already created (as this is a pretty common test).

The purpose of the user group is to do a little bit of training on tips and tricks, sharing of best practices and provide and providing an opportunity to give feedback and request new features to the Product Manager (me!). We will probalby also bring a few new peices of equipment that you might be interested in from some of the other product lines. Type rest of the post here. We recieved an inquiring from a customer in Spain today who is testing rocket propellent in accordance with a NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization).

This is another new application for Bluehill - using both Virtual Measurements and Expression Builder. The test in question is pretty typical stress relaxation test in tension - with the following exception - the standard requires a plot of the relation modulus vs. How do we do this? By creating a virtual measurement for modulus (you need to write your own formula, like you would for a user calculation), the measurement is now available for plotting (remember, a virtual measurement is a user calculation that is evaluated at every data point).

Further, in the standard, a log-log graph is shown. This can also be recreated: create 2 new virtual measurements - one for the log of the time measurement and one for the log of the modulus measurement. Put Bluehill 3 to the test! I have a pretty long list of feature requests already - but could use your help prioritizing them! For example - you tell me - which of the following products would you be MOST excited about?1. I started this the other day but never finished it!Steve also wants to be able to discuss test resuls in a conference room with colleagues or over a conference call. How can he view the data that was created in the lab? Here is my suggestion: get a software license agreement and install the Bluehill software CD that you already have, on a PC in the conference room and/or at your desk PC (or laptop).

Start storing all test results, methods, and report on a network drive (password protected if necessary) so that the files can easily be reviewed remotely. With the TestCam module - you can also view the video files and show someone how the specimen broke! Steve told me that his company is trying to use the TestCam module in Bluehill with a traditional webcam to record historical files of specimen failures for their records. (Steve is in the medical device industry and these video-based records help achieve better FDA compliance with record keeping according to ). However, he was wondering if Bluehill could work with video sources other than a webcam to provide increased magnification of very small specimens. In addition to a standard USB webcam, we can accomodate pretty much any USB video device including this really cool providing up to 400X magnification! You can buy this microscope off the shelf and start using it as long as you have Bluehill's TestCam module.

I spent the day at in Philadelphia, PA last week with Mr. Schuyler Patton, a chemistry teacher who has developed a pretty impressive and comprehensive materials science course for his students, covering everything from intermolecular forces and crystaline structures to stress-strain behavior and viscoelastic properties (all while including plenty of cool real world examples and lab exercises). Patton has been working closely with the and I am now getting involved to help provide Mr. Patton with the additional hardware and software training he needs to get the students using the Instron to its full potential.

During my visit, I was thinking how great it would have been if I had a teacher like this when I was in high school! If there are any other educators or teachers out there who are interested in what it takes to put together a similar course - I would love to hear from you! Hey - we might be able to help! I was flying through a prompted method setup with another colleague and double clicked on a parameter that was previously selected in the 'Before Sample' section. This double click brings up a dialog that allowed me to edit the default value and completely change the name of the parameter. This can save a LOT of time that would have been spent searching through the method to see where the parameter was originally setup.

Try it out in one of your own methods and see how easy it is! Open a previously created prompted method and go to Prompted TestBefore Sample and double click on any of the parameters in the selected list. (Note: this works in all steps of the prompted test!).

Jim R and I visited three customers yesterday! It was a great day to be out of the office and to have my father-in-law's convertible! We got some great feedback on a market research survey we are doing and I got a great tip for the blog (as well as a pretty bad seat belt burn on my shoulder!)Customer request: 'Repeatability of results is really important to us. It would be really great if the software could check to see if anyone calibrated the load cell recently before running more tests'. YES - BLUEHILL CAN DO THAT!!'

Go to the load cell icon in the console - and visit the tab for 'checks'. You can choose:1. Periodic checks (to check if the load cell was calibrated in the time region specified (as requested!))2. Drift checks3. Pre-test checks (this is a great option if you have ever started a test but forgot to balance the load)FYI - the user interface for the transducer icon changed slightly from BH2 to BH3.

There are slight differences between API in Bluehill 2 and Bluehill 3! The defaults table provides an efficient way of including test parameters that do not change from specimen to specimen (such as data rate, test date and time, number of specimens tested and any text, number or choice inputs used) in your report. The defaults table must be included in the body of the report for it to show in the report.So for example - I have ONE Bluehill Report Template that I have customized for myself. I can use that same report template with almost every method I create because I do the following 2 steps:1. My report template includes a copy of the defaults table in the body of the report, and2. I make sure my method is setup so that test parameters I want to include on the report are selected in the defaults table.Performing this step ensures that information is captured in the report correctly every time AND that your report looks good every time (you shouldn't need to edit your report template once you have it set up properly).

One of my next blogs will include an overview of how to create a GREAT report template for yourself! Set up the method to start the test when the pneumatic grips close. There are a few details to add here. Bluehill 1 and 2 could always do this - but it was never recommended for applications other than those that used pneumatic cord & yarn grips. With the recent release of the new pneumatic grip specimen holding fingers (I will include a product link soon!) - a wider variety of applications can benefit from this feature without risk of pinched fingers.
